The understanding of how foot orthoses actually work is constantly being investigated and researched.
It is becoming more clear as new research emerges that orthoses significantly change the forces within the injured tissues and this appears to be much more closely linked to symptom reduction. Interestingly, it has also been shown that they do not need to significantly alter the alignment (kinematics) to reduce the forces (kinetics). i.e. they do not need to ‘re-align’ the skeleton to do this.
Our job at Podiatry Wise is to understand how manipulating the forces for a given patient or given pathology (injury) will achieve the desired outcome. To achieve this it may not always require foot orthoses as an initial treatment option.
Depending on your condition, at Podiatry Wise we use traditional plaster techniques or the latest 3D scanning technology to create an orthotic from a variety of materials.
